Nail Adapters are most often used in Franz Cells. They can be used with modified Cell Clamps in Side-Bi-Side Cells
PermeGear Nail Adapters are 28mm wide by 34mm long and are designed to work with 9mm or 11.28mm Franz Cells having flat ground joints. PermeGear Nail Adapters also work with 9mm Franz Cells having flat flange joints. The Nail Adapters shown in the photos are made of a black polymer which is used here only for illustration, no black Nail Adapters are manufactured.
Nail Adapters have o-rings in the clamping surfaces to prevent leakage. Nail specimens may be secured with or without sealant by four stainless steel screws that hold the assembly together. Gaskets or sealant are recommended.
Nail Adapters are available in two different varieties at this time, Neoflon and Type 316 Stainless Steel.
Nail Adapters are available in Neoflon, which is Daikin’s trade name for polychlorotrifluoroethylene, and Type 316 Stainless Steel. The part number for all Nail Adapters begins with NA followed by a dash, a two digit code indicating the orifice diameter in millimeters, another dash, and either NF for Neoflon or SS for Type 316 Stainless Steel.
The most common Nail Adapter has part number NA-05-NF which means it has a 5mm orifice diameter and is made of Neoflon.
Nail Adapters are available in three orifice diameters: 3mm, 5mm, and 9mm. They can be used in 9mm or 11.28mm Franz Cells.
|The photograph below shows all the components of a Nail Adapter. Included are both halves of the adapter, the o-rings for the surfaces adjacent to the Franz Cell components, and the stainless steel screws that hold the Nail Adapter together.||The photograph below shows the underside of an assembled Nail Adapter. A piece of Teflon foam is shown between the upper and lower components for clarity. The screws are spaced to not interfere with a 9mm joint.|
|The photograph below is of a 9mm jacketed Franz Cell with a Nail Adapter. Please note that the cell has a flat ground joint but the clamp is a horseshoe clamp which is normally used with flat flange joints. Pinchclamps cannot open wide enough for Nail Adapters so horseshoe clamps are used. The horseshoe clamp has longer screws than standard.||The photograph is of a 9mm unjacketed Franz Cell with a Nail Adapter. Please note that the cell has a flat flange joint and horseshoe clamp although longer screws are provided to accept the ~10mm thickness of the Nail Adapter with a specimen. Devices as thick as 30mm have been used in Franz Cells with flat flange joints and horseshoe clamps.|
